Mastermind Of Kenya Mall Attack Bribed ‘Corrupt Police’ To Escape Being Caught In Nigeria – Reports

 Samantha Lewthwaite

Indications have emerged that Samantha Lewthwaite, the British widow known as “White Widow” accused of masterminding the terrorist attack on Kenyan shopping mall in which over 60 people were killed, was in Nigeria and evaded detection, according to a report in the UK-based newspaper, Daily Mirror.
According to the newspaper, “In Nigeria, where police forces are notoriously corrupt, there were reports that she (Lewthwaite) was almost caught a while ago, but she bribed her way out of trouble.”
The full report read: “If White Widow Samantha Lewthwaite is on the run she will be hard to catch. If a Lewthwaite were to be on the run in Kenya, Nigeria or Somalia, it would be a easier to evade detection than in Europe.
“She would be wearing a veil, and sensitivities about searching Muslim women would be observed so she could easily slip through difficult checkpoints.
“In Nigeria, where police forces are notoriously corrupt, there were reports she was almost caught a while ago, but she bribed her way out of trouble,” the news report said.
“Extremist communities such as al-Shabaab are tight-knit in these countries, making it difficult to recruit agents to penetrate them and trace her.
“And Lewthwaite may hold a great deal of power as a special kind of jihadist, having proved her worth in previous attacks.
“As a white convert mum and widow of a 7/7 bomber, she would be invaluable propaganda and would command huge loyalty.
“Also, the austere nature of her adopted culture means she would rarely go out, so there would be few opportunities to follow her.
“Bounties have failed to nail jihadists as money has no value to individuals loyal to the cause.”
Meanwhile, the Nigerian Ambassador to Kenya, Ambassador Akin Oyateru, yesterday confirmed that no Nigerian citizen was affected in the terrorist attacks or involved with the terrorists in the Westgate Shopping Mall attacks which ended Tuesday after a four-day siege.
“We have gone through the list with a fine tooth comb and found no Nigerian name among the dead or the injured,” Oyateru told journalists.
The ambassador recalled that at the time the siege started, most members of the Nigerian community were attending a pan-Nigerian meeting at a hotel in the central part of the city.
“The meeting was immediately secured and the Nigerians given security briefing,” he disclosed.
Oyateru, however, expressed Nigeria’s condolences to the government and people of Kenya.
He called on the Nigerian community in Kenya to heed to the calls for blood donations for the injured and also contribute to the relief efforts in whatever way they could.
The Nigerian Mission in Nairobi, he disclosed, has already donated a modest sum of money to assist towards relief efforts, he said.
“Neither the Kenyan or Nigerian government or any other government would succumb to blackmail. These are people feeding on the orgy of violence, they have no cause, they just indulge in mindless killings,” he said.
He appealed to the public to always be vigilant and report suspicious activities to security agencies.
“Terrorism is a transnational problem that confronts all nations and everyone has to work together to combat this. Kenya has responded that it will not pull out of Somalia, it will stay for as long as it is required,” Oyateru said.

ASUU strike: Senate calls for lasting solution

david-mark
Senator David Mark, has asked the federal and state legislators, especially those in the committess of education, to look for lasting solutions to the ongoing strike embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU.

The Senate president said: “the persistent strike actions by ASUU have had tremendous impact on the quality of our education system. It is becoming necessary for us to initiate a legislative solution to the problem.”
Mark was speaking yesterday at the conference of National Assembly and 36 state houses of assembly committees on the theme “Transforming Nigerian Education Sector” and was represented by Solomon Ganiyu, the minority whip of the Senate.
“The job situation in the country is not what we want it to be,” he added. “The universities have to ensure they pass out marketable graduates that can stand the work environment and add value where required.”
He called on the universities, to re-work their curriculum, so that Nigerian graduates can have necessary skills to be self-employed, while also calling on the private sector to step up too, as the government cannot fund the sector adequately.

TRAGIC: Ghanaian Lawyer Hangs Himself in His Office, Leaves Suicide Note

A 44-year-old lawyer and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Property Lane Limited, Kofi Yawson-Agyei, has committed suicide in Accra.

Yawson-Agyei, who was the Secretary of Ghana Institute of Surveyors, was found hanging with an electric cable in his CUA House office at Adabraka in Accra early yesterday morning.

Before his death, the deceased who was also a land surveyor, was said to have left a written note and signed a cheque for GH¢3000 directing it to be given to the wife, Felicia Yawson-Agyei. The body had since been deposited at the Police Hospital morgue awaiting autopsy.

Confirming the story to DAILY GUIDE, Chief Superintendent Frank Adufati, Accra Regional Crime Officer,
said KofI Yawson-Agyei was discovered dead in his office at Adabraka around 6:00am yesterday.

An on-the-spot enquiry revealed that at about 12 midnight that fateful day, the CEO of Property Lane Limited told the wife Felicia Agyei-Yawson that he was going for a stroll.

For a while, the deceased was not returning and so the wife informed friends and relatives about the development and a search was mounted for him.

At about 6:00am that same day, Mr Yawson-Agyei was found to have hanged himself in his office by the relatives.

A report was then lodged with the Accra Regional Police for investigations.

The deceased before his death left a suicide note and a signed Standard Bank cheque of GH¢3000, directing a lady by name Naa in his office to give it to his wife.

The note read, “Naa give the written Standard Cheque to my wife. Pick the cheque from Makola, pay in and use signed cheque for my wife. The balance in the Fidelity account is about GH¢3000 Plus about GH¢7000 from Makola. Mankoadze owes GH¢2000.”

Police preliminary investigations suspected no foul play but investigations are on-going, according to the police Crime officer.

No marks of violence were found on the body at the scene, sources told DAILY GUIDE.

KENYA MALL ATTACK: “You’re A Very Bad Man” – 4yr Old Kid Confronts Gunman Who Gave Him Chocolate & Begged For Forgiveness

kenyan_kid
Elliot Prior, from Windsor, Berkshire, told one of the terrorists that he was a ‘very bad man’ as he protected his mother, Amber, who had been shot in the leg, and six-year-old sister Amelie.
Incredibly, the attacker took pity on the family and bizarrely handed the children Mars bars before telling them ‘Please forgive me, we are not monsters.’
His story emerged as sporadic gunfire continued to ring out from inside the mall early today as Kenyan security forces battled Al Qaeda-linked terrorists into a fourth day.
Despite Kenyan police assurances that they had taken control of the building, a security expert with contacts inside the mall said at least 10 hostages were still being held by a band of attackers, possibly as many as 13.
Kenya’s foreign minister Amina Mohamed said ’two or three’ Americans and one British woman were among those who attacked the Westgate shopping mall in Nairobi.
His mother, Amber, told of her family’s terrifying escape from Al Shabaab terrorists who butchered 62 people in the Nairobi shopping centre.
The film producer had been queuing to buy milk in Nairobi’s Westgate Shopping Centre when the militants struck.
She hid under a cold meat counter in the Nakumatt supermarket for an hour-and-a-half with her children beneath her before terrorists finally found them and shot her in the thigh.

Elliot’s uncle, Alex Coutts, told The Sun: ‘They had a lucky escape. The terrorists said if any of the kids were alive in the supermarket they could leave. ‘Amber made the decision to stand up and say “yes”.’
‘Then Elliot started arguing with them and called them bad men. He was very brave.’
After discovering the advertising producer was of French origin, the men began to plead with her and claimed that the Muslim faith ‘was not a bad one’.‘He told me I had to change my religion to Islam and said “do you forgive us? Do you forgive us?’, the mother told The Independent.
‘Naturally, I was going to say whatever they wanted and they let us go’.
Bizarrely, the terrorists handed the children Mars bars before they fled with two other children, including a 12-year-old boy who had at first refused to leave his dead mother.
The fate of 20 others who had taken refuge under the meat counter is unknown.
The family’s escape is particularly astonishing in light of the indiscriminate slaughter of men, women and children throughout the mall after Al Shabaab launched their assault on Saturday.

Lagosians spend N36billion annually on parties – Governor Fashola

Lagos state governor, Babatunde Raji Fashola, this weekend revealed that more than N36 billion is spent by Lagosians annually to organise parties. The governor said this at the 4th edition of the Lagos Ignite Enterprise and Employability project, a joint youth empowerment programme between the government and the Afterschool Graduate Development Centre, AGDC.
Governor Fashola said:

“This was the study of night life carried out by the government in five local governments including Agege, Mushin, Ifako-Ijaiye and Ikeja and another local government. It showed that more than N36 billion was spent on 1555 parties held within the period. We did a study between October and November last year. We studied from Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, three days every week for four weeks which was 12 nights. In 12 nights, 1555 parties were held in these local governments. In terms of drinks, food and all other engagements during such parties, about N1.2 billion was spent and when we dis-aggregated them we saw how much went to DJ, MC, food and drinks, the total picture in the state now and I don’t want to give you a wrong number but it’s something in the region of about N3 billion monthly on that side of our life and people are playing and impacting on that side of our economy.
The governor further stated that Aso Ebi alone gulped a minimum of N1.2billion monthly.

ASUU: Strike Will Improve Education Sector

The President, Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Dr Nasir Fagge, said on Tuesday that the current strike by lecturers of public universities in the country was a sacrifice for better things to come.

Fagge said in Lagos that unless the deficits in the education sector, especially the university system, were addressed once and for all, there would be no development.
The lecturers, under the aegis of ASUU, had on June 30 embarked on what it had described as ‘comprehensive, total and indefinite strike’ in public universities across the country.
The lecturers are asking for the implementation of some aspects of an agreement they jointly entered into with the Federal Government in 2009.
According to Fagge, it is regrettable that the strike is protracted, and that the decision of ASUU to remain adamant until its demands are fully met can seem uncomfortable and worrisome.
He said that the industrial action was a sacrifice needed to salvage the entire economy of the country.
``I sincerely want to call on all concerned, especially students and parents, to bear with us, as well as join hands with us in the struggle to right the wrongs in our education sector once and for all, for the good of us all and that of the country.
``I know it is quite a difficult time for us but I also want to state that what we are doing is for our own good, as well as ensure that strikes become rare, as a weapon to get things done in our system.
``We also want to ensure that there is sincerity and respect for mutual agreements by parties in order to attain a common goal for the good of our dear country,” he said.
Fagge, however, lauded the supervising education Minister, Chief Nyesom Wike, for finding time to meet with the Executive Committee of ASUU, in a bid to find a lasting solution to the protracted strike.
The unionist also commended the Committee of Vice-Chancellors and other stakeholders for their concern in attempts to end the strike.
He noted that such was the spirit needed to ensure that nobody felt cheated and that what the lecturers were asking for was truly for the advancement of the course of the country.
According to Fagge, with the current attempts by the various stakeholders, he is optimistic that there will soon be a mutual understanding between the parties.
``I think with the various meetings we have held with the concerned stakeholders, I am optimistic that there will soon be a way out and our demands met, so that in the shortest possible time, we will get the required development that will make us compete favourably within the comity of nations.
``For us in the academic communities, we strongly wish government should look into the deficit of insincerity in our system, teaching facilities, in order for us to be able to deliver on our mandate.
``Majority of our children and wards in this country do attend these public universities and we cannot afford to fold our hands and watch them study under deplorable conditions, while those who can afford sending their children abroad feel little or no concern about it,'' he said.
On the appointment of ministers to replace the recently sacked ones, Fagge suggested that it should be hinged strictly on the basis of merit.
``We need people who will come in with confidence of the power that be in terms of tackling challenges; be up and doing and would always want to come up with new approaches to addressing problems,” he said.
