Niger To Enforce Ban On Commercial Motorcycles From January 2
Effective 2 January 2014, the traffic law banning the operations of commercial motorcyclists also known as okada would be enforced in Minna, Niger State, Governor Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu has said.
But to cushion the effects of the ban, adequate arrangements have been put in place, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Danladi Ndayebo, said in a statement on Sunday.
The statement also said the Ministry of Transportation had taken full delivery of 1000 units of Mahindra Tricycles (Keken Talba) in addition to eight units of 18-seater buses and 12 units of 100 capacity Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) buses that have already been put on the roads to ease transportation problems in the state capital.
Gov. Aliyu asserted that the traffic law had come to stay and would be enforced strictly beginning from the first week of next year.
The statement dismissed concerns that motorcycle operators would be put out of job as a consequence of the ban, saying that the newly purchased tricycles would be distributed to Okada operators through the Amalgamated Commercial Motorcycle Riders Association of Nigeria, ACOMORAN.
