Ghana workers threaten strike over tariff hike

Ghana’s Trade Union Congress has given a 10-day ultimatum to government to slash the increase in tariff in the interest of the citizenry.
TUC’s Secretary-General, Kofi Asamoah, said this in a statement in reaction to recent tariff increase on water and electricity by the Public Utilities and Regulatory Commission.
Asamoah accused the government of failing to respect an understanding reached with workers for gradual tariff increase to minimise the impacts.
The TUC official said workers would embark on strike if the government refused to reduce the tariff after the 10-day period.
He said the TUC would stop at nothing to protest against the recent increment due to its effects on the people.
“As a union, we are not opposed to some measures of increment in tariff; the current increment is unacceptable,” he said.
